A new client moves to your area, or their usual stylist leaves, and they search "hair salon near me". They look at the map, check the photos and reviews, and book with one of the first few salons they see. If your salon is not there, your chairs stay empty while a competitor fills theirs. Salon SEO is the work of showing up in those results and making it easy to book once people find you.
How clients search for a salon
- "hair salon near me", "salon open Sunday"
- "balayage [city]", "keratin treatment near me", "curly hair salon"
- "men's haircut near me", "kids haircut [town]"
- "bridal hair [city]", "hair extensions near me"
For searches like these, the map results usually come first, and many people book from there without visiting a website at all. That makes your Google Business Profile the most important page you have.
Step 1: set up your Google Business Profile
- Choose the right primary category, such as Hair salon, Beauty salon or Barber shop, from the list Google shows you. Add secondary categories only for what you really offer.
- Use your real salon name, with no extra keywords or town names.
- List every service, such as cuts, colour, balayage, treatments and extensions, with a short description and a starting price if you can.
- Keep hours exact, including late nights and holiday hours.
- Add a booking link. If your booking software works with Google, a booking button may appear on your profile. If not, add your booking page as the appointment link.
- Upload real photos every week: finished looks, your team, the salon and the entrance. Photos are often what makes someone choose one salon over another.
If stylists in your salon run their own businesses, Google's rules for individual practitioners decide whether they can have their own profiles. Read them before anyone creates a listing. Our Google Business Profile checklist covers every setting, and what to post on your Google Business Profile gives weekly post ideas.
Step 2: make your website easy to book from
Your website does not need to be big. It needs to answer questions quickly and get people to book:
- A clear booking button at the top of every page
- A page for each main service, such as colour, cuts, treatments, extensions and bridal, with what it involves, how long it takes and starting prices
- A team page with each stylist's name, photo and specialities
- Your address, phone and hours, matching your Google profile exactly, plus parking and directions
- A gallery of your real work
Service pages help you appear for searches like "balayage near me", where people are looking for a specific skill rather than any salon. If your site gets visits but few bookings, read why your website gets visitors but no calls.
Step 3: reviews
For salons, reviews are often the deciding factor. Ask every happy client, for example with a text after the appointment that includes your direct review link, or a small card at the front desk. Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and in your own words. Never offer discounts or free services for reviews, because it breaks Google's rules. Our guide on how to get more Google reviews has simple wording you can copy.
Step 4: Instagram and Google together
Instagram is where many people look at a salon's work before they book. Google is where they search when they are ready. Use both, and connect them:
- Post finished looks, before and after photos (with the client's permission) and short videos of your team at work
- Put the same booking link in your Instagram bio, your Google profile and your website
- Reuse your best photos on your Google profile every week
- Reply to messages quickly, because people often book with whoever answers first

Step 5: listings
Keep your salon name, address, phone and website the same on Apple Maps (through Apple Business Connect), Bing Places, Yelp, Facebook and your booking platform's public profile. Old phone numbers or addresses on any of them confuse both clients and search engines. If you are missing from Apple Maps, see why a business is not showing on Apple Maps.
What to track
- Calls, bookings and website clicks from your Google Business Profile
- Online bookings, and which services they are for
- New clients compared with returning clients
- How new clients say they found you
Common salon SEO mistakes
- No booking link on the Google profile
- Photos that have not been updated in months
- Services and prices only in an image, which Google cannot read well
- Hours on Google that do not match the real hours
- Reviews left without a reply
- Different booking links on Instagram, Google and the website

Frequently asked questions
How do I get my hair salon to show up on Google Maps?
Create and verify a Google Business Profile, choose the right category such as Hair salon, then complete every part of it: services, hours, photos, booking link and reviews. Keep it active with regular photos and posts.
Can customers book my salon directly from Google?
Often, yes. If your booking software works with Google, a booking button can appear on your profile. You can also add a booking link to your profile yourself.
Should each stylist have their own Google profile?
Google has specific rules for individual practitioners. Stylists who run their own independent business, such as some booth renters, may qualify. Read the rules before creating extra profiles, because duplicates can cause suspensions.
Is Instagram or Google more important for a salon?
They do different jobs. Google brings people who are searching for a salon right now. Instagram shows your work and keeps you in mind for next time. Most salons do best with both, linked to the same booking page.
How much does SEO cost for a salon?
Doing the basics yourself is free. Agency help for a single salon usually costs a monthly fee. Our plans start at $180 a month with no contract.
