You are moving your business, and you need customers to find the new place, not drive to the old one. The good news: you can change your business address on Google without losing a single review, as long as you edit the profile you already have instead of starting a new one. Here is how to do it, what to expect from Google's review and verification, and the other places you need to update so your rankings move with you.
First: edit, do not start over
Your Google Business Profile holds your reviews, photos, questions and years of history. When you move, all of that should come with you. That only happens if you change the address on your existing profile.
- Same business, new place: edit the address on your current profile.
- Opening a second location and keeping the first: the new location gets its own profile. The old one stays as it is.
- Closing one of several locations: mark that location's profile as permanently closed.
Creating a fresh profile for the new address leaves your reviews behind and can create a duplicate. If that has already happened, see how to fix a duplicate Google Business Profile listing.
Before you change anything
- Wait until you are really open there, or very close to it. Google may ask you to prove the business operates at the new address.
- Put your sign up at the new location. Permanent signage helps a lot with video verification.
- Keep proof ready: a lease, a utility bill or a business registration showing the new address.
- Update your website first, in the footer, on the contact page and in any embedded map, so Google sees the same address in both places.
How to change the address on your Google Business Profile
- Sign in to the Google account that owns or manages the profile.
- Search for your business name on Google, or open the Google Maps app, and open your profile manager.
- Choose Edit profile, then open the Location or business address section.
- Enter the new address exactly as it appears on your mail and signage, including the suite or unit number.
- Check the map pin and drag it to your real entrance if it is in the wrong place.
- Save. Google will review the change, and may ask you to verify again.
Google changes the menus from time to time, so the labels may look slightly different, but the steps are the same.
If you are a service area business
If you visit customers and your address is hidden, you still need to update it when your base moves, because Google uses it to decide where you rank. Then check your service areas: keep them to the places you can really reach from the new base. Our guide to service area businesses on Google Maps explains how this works.
What to expect after you save
- Review time. The change may show as pending for a few days or longer. Customers see the old address until it is approved. If it stays stuck, read why Google Business Profile edits stay pending.
- A new verification. This is common after a move. Our guide to verification problems covers video verification step by step.
- Rankings move with you. Map rankings depend a lot on distance, so you will start ranking around the new address and less around the old one. A move across town changes who sees you; a move to a new city is close to starting again in that area, although you keep your reviews.
Do not make other big changes at the same time
A new address plus a new name, category and phone number in one go looks like someone taking over a profile, and it is a common trigger for suspensions. Change the address first, wait until it is live, then make any other changes one at a time. If something does go wrong, see how to fix a suspended Google Business Profile.
Update everywhere else
Google checks your address against other websites. Old addresses left around the web confuse customers and weaken your new listing. Update, in this order:
- Your website, including the footer, contact page, map and any location pages
- Apple Maps, through Apple Business Connect (see business not showing on Apple Maps)
- Bing Places
- Facebook, Instagram and any other social profiles
- Yelp, Nextdoor, BBB and the directories for your industry
- Your booking, ordering or delivery platforms
- Email signatures, invoices, printed materials and your phone greeting
Tell your customers
- Add a Google Business Profile post about the move, with a photo of the new place. Our guide to Google Business Profile posts has ideas.
- Post on Facebook and Instagram, and email or text regular customers.
- Put a notice with the new address at the old location for a few weeks, if you can.
- Update your photos on Google: the new front door, signage, parking and inside.
Common mistakes when moving
- Creating a new profile and losing all the reviews
- Changing the address before the new place is open
- Leaving the old address on the website and other listings
- Changing name, address, category and phone all at once
- Using a PO box, mailbox store or virtual office as the new address, which Google does not allow
Not sure your profile survived the move? If it has disappeared from search, start with why your Google Business Profile is not showing up.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change my business address on Google Maps?
Sign in to the Google account that manages your Business Profile, search for your business name on Google or open the Google Maps app, choose Edit profile, then open the location or address section. Enter the new address, check the map pin, and save. Google reviews the change before it goes live.
Will I lose my Google reviews if I change my address?
No, not if you edit the address on your existing profile. Your reviews, photos and history stay with that profile. You lose them if you create a new profile for the new address, which is why you should always edit the one you have.
Do I need to verify my Google Business Profile again after moving?
Often, yes. An address change is one of the edits most likely to trigger a new verification, usually by video. Have your signage up and proof such as a lease or utility bill ready before you make the change.
How long does it take for a new address to show on Google?
It is not fixed. Some address changes appear within a few days, others take longer, especially if Google asks you to verify again. Avoid making other big edits while the address change is in review.
Should I create a new Google Business Profile when I move?
No. Edit the address on your current profile. Only create a new profile if you are opening an extra location and keeping the old one open, because each location that serves customers can have its own profile.
How do I change a business address on Google if I am not the owner?
Open the business on Google Maps, choose Suggest an edit, and update the address. Google checks suggestions before accepting them. If it is your business but you lost access, request access to the profile instead of creating a new one.
