How to choose an SEO agency: 12 questions to ask

By the RankSharp team · 29 October 2026 · 8 min read

Hiring an SEO agency is hard because you cannot see most of the work, and results take months. By the time you know if you chose badly, you have already paid for a while. The best protection is asking the right questions before you sign. Here are twelve, with the answers you want to hear.

Before you start: know what you want

Write down three things first: the services that make you the most money, the area you serve, and what a good month would look like (more calls, more bookings, more quote requests). An agency that does not ask you about these is guessing.

Questions about the plan

  1. "What will you do in the first month?"
Good answer: something specific, such as an audit, fixing technical problems, improving your Google Business Profile and rewriting key page titles. Weak answer: "we will optimize your site".
  2. "Which searches will you target, and why?"
Good answer: real searches your customers type, like "water heater repair in Tampa", chosen because people search them and they lead to paying work. Watch out for vanity keywords that sound impressive but bring no calls.
  3. "How long before I should expect results?"
Good answer: an honest range, usually a few months for meaningful growth, with early signs sooner. Our guide on how long SEO takes explains why.
  4. "Do you work on Google Maps as well as the website?"
For a local business, the map pack often brings more calls than the website rankings. A good agency treats your Google Business Profile as a core part of the work.

Questions about how they work

  1. "How do you get links to my site?"
Good answer: local directories, partners, suppliers, local press, useful content. Red flag: buying links in bulk or using private networks of sites. These can lead to penalties.
  2. "Will you write content, and who writes it?"
Good answer: they will explain who writes it, how they learn about your business, and that you can review it before it goes live.
  3. "Who will actually do the work, and who do I talk to?"
Many agencies pass work to other teams. That can be fine, but you should know, and you should have one named contact who answers your questions.
  4. "Can I see an example report?"
Good answer: a report that shows work done, rankings, traffic from Google and, ideally, calls or form enquiries. Not just a long list of numbers with no explanation.

Questions about money and ownership

  1. "Is there a contract, and how do I cancel?"
Many agencies ask for six or twelve months. Some flexibility is reasonable because SEO takes time, but you should know exactly what happens if you want to leave.
  2. "What exactly is included in the price?"
Ask how many pages, posts or hours a month you get. Compare like for like. See how much SEO costs for what different budgets usually cover.
  3. "Who owns my website, content and accounts if we stop?"
The answer should be you. Your Google Business Profile, Search Console, analytics and website should be in your name, with the agency added as a user.
  4. "Can you guarantee first place on Google?"
This is a test. The right answer is no. Google itself says no one can guarantee a top ranking. Anyone who promises it is either guessing or using risky tricks.

Red flags to walk away from

  • Guaranteed rankings or "page one in two weeks"
  • Secret methods they will not explain
  • They want to own your domain, website or Google profile
  • Long contracts with no clear exit
  • Reports full of numbers but no mention of calls or enquiries
  • Cold emails saying your site has "critical errors" with no detail

What about cheap or offshore agencies?

Price alone does not tell you much. Some expensive agencies do very little, and some lower-cost teams do careful work because their costs are lower, not their standards. Judge the answers to the questions above, not the price tag. We wrote more about this in hiring an offshore SEO agency.
